As another school year comes to an end, I've found myself reflecting on something that has stayed with me throughout my years working in schools:
Every year group is different.
This time last year, as I said goodbye to my Year 11 and Year 13 students, I received just one thank you card. Not that cards are ever expected, but I remember quietly wondering whether those traditions had simply disappeared.
This year has felt very different. I've been genuinely touched by the thoughtful cards, kind emails and lovely gifts (it seems my students know I have a soft spot for plants and chocolate!).
But for me, it's never been about the cards or the gifts themselves. It's about what they represent... CONNECTION.
When children and young people feel seen, heard and understood, relationships begin to grow. Trust develops over time, often through the smallest of moments. Sometimes neither the adult nor the young person realises just how meaningful that therapeutic relationship has become until it's time to say goodbye.
That's one of the privileges of working in schools. Every cohort brings its own personality, challenges and strengths. Some year groups naturally leave a lasting imprint on your heart.
This has been one of those groups.
