As a School-Based Counselor, I love using the stress bucket metaphor to help children and young people better understand and manage stress.
Imagine a bucket that can hold a certain amount of water. This bucket represents your ability to cope with stress. The size of your bucket varies from person to person. Stressful events and situations can fill up your bucket, and can cause overflow - unhelpful coping strategies. It's essential that we empower children and young people to recognise that there is a tap which is within their control. Activities like relaxation, exercise, socialising, playing, journalling, and self-care are essential.
This metaphor is a fantastic tool for people of all ages, from children to adults. It's a simple yet effective way to understand and manage stress. Try it.
