According to the Child Bereavement Network (CBN), by age 16, approximately 4.7% of young people have lost one or both parents (Parsons, 2011). This translates to at least one child per classroom, if not more.
Farleigh Hospice recognises that grief is a normal reaction to loss. Many young people can cope with bereavement and life's changes with support from family, friends, and their community, including schools. While the depth of emotions can vary, many children and young people don't require specialised services. This is not to diminish the range and depth of emotions that young people may feel following the death of a person who is significant to them, but they know that many children and young people will not need the support of specialist services to manage this.
To provide additional support, Farleigh Hospice offers the Yo-Yo Project. This initiative has been running since 2006 and is beautifully designed to help children and young people cope with bereavement. Their website provides a range of free and incredible resources.
